Hey Duuuuudes! Long time no see! I’m sorry I haven’t blogged you enough been a little busy

We’ve been busy bees, and we’re getting some good results. We’ve recently had the pleasure of working on a few new tracks with the great Steve Fisk. The recordings are coming out incredible. Inarguably the best thing we’ve done. Well I guess you can argue, but its cool stuff. I’ve got a real good feeling about this new record we’re working on.

We originally planned on putting something longer-form out during this summer, but with time looking the way it it does I think it’s more likely that we will do an EP and/or single by summer, and the longer release sometime later in the year. We’ve also got another secret project brewing, a split 7” w/ one of my favorite artists! I’m not spoiling it yet though.

We filmed a video for one of the new songs, “Firewood.” We’re bout 90% finished with the actual filming, then we gotta edit it and we’ll put it out whenever we put out the song. and we’ve still got a few more of our KLTV sessions coming out sometime, but they’re all new songs so we figured we’d wait a little bit to put em out.

Other than that, I’ve been booking booking booking for the summer months. We’re coming through Cali at the end of July/early Aug. if you’ve got somewhere you want us to play on the west coast, send me something and let me know! We wanna play for you.

Oh and come to our ground zero show this Friday!

Finally, we are very excited to say we will be heading to Seattle the following weekend to do our first bit of “real” studio time for the new record! We are getting closer to finally releasing some new music.

In honor of the 2nd anniversary of the release of our first official EP I am posting a liveblog of myself listening to the record for the first time in quite a while.

Aluminum - First of all it’s funny that we put the slide guitar at the beginning. Joey told me later he got in a little trouble w/ his dad because he had been wondering where his slide guitar was (his dad let Joey borrow it) and then he heard it on our song and knew he had it! Mike had a pretty different feel in the original demo for this one, it was pretty straight, and I think the guitars were really fuzzy. It’s actually a really cool version as well. I liked Mike’s lyrics on this, he’s good at writing what could be nonsense or important/insightful. Matt solo is pretty cool. Our recording ability sure has improved since this time.

Summer Fun Song - When I wrote this I always wanted to have the electronic intro for the first verse(ish) thing, and I just put this beat together really quick and planned on making a better one eventually. However, I think I tried once and couldn’t make anything  that I liked better, so this ended up being the one. I still think the beat is sorta cheesy. Matt add the bendy harmonics thing he does over the intro, and made it sound pretty awesome. I was always proud because this song has a weird arrangement. I guess its ABABCDAB arrangement. I liked this song a lot for a long time I’m not sure it holds up as well now. The bridge turned out pretty cool though. Nice Joey Britten bass work. Playing this one live in the old days was always one of my highlights, I have fond memories of the day when we all practiced it and got it down good for the first time. Cool Matt solo I remember he said it was in lydian(?) mode

DGWYW - I remember one of the first times we played this, Mike was (I think it was Mike?) on drums and when we were coming out of this chorus he did that really short half-time beat while matt says “Oh yeah” by accident, and then we thought it sounded awesome and I think it’s a very important part of the song now. I was in recording class at LCC at this time, and I ended up just using all of my recording time to work on this record, and most of my time was spent messing with these awesome old analog synths, which I just tried to put anywhere on the record. One of the spots was the organ on this one. I remember we couldn’t get a rhythm guitar sound we liked, and we tried all of our different guitars and amps and were not satisfied, and finally ended up settling on Mike’s Ibanez artcore hollowbody, a guitar we all thought sucked, but ended up being the best fit. This recording sure has a lot of open space to it. It sounds kinda cool. Some classic snare fills from cody. I guess I hadn’t thought of my vox harmonies at the time of this recording because there is no harmonies on this. In fact, if I remember correctly there are only one or two instances of vocal harmony on this whole EP. Matt had pretty cool lead tone on this one too.

Home - Cool intro sounds. I put more of those synths from my school on this. I like the bridge in this song, we put two guitar parts that probably shouldn’t have been together together and we thought it sounded pretty cool. Mikes voice sounds younger for sure. I also liked the bridge lyric. We don’t play this one anymore, except probably at the Lake. I think Mike improv’d his lyrics for this for a long time live.  I thought we octaved the solo on this? maybe that was the other recording.

We Don’t Sleep - Well there’s 800 versions of this one now, and I would say this version has the least attention. My recording class teacher Aaron Andersen helped us mix it. Not much to say I guess, the guitars sure aren’t very big in the jam-out section. See that’s why we had to record it again! Fun fact: The synths, acoustic guitar lead, falsetto bridge vocals, xylophones, and melodicas are the same in all versions of this song, we kept it through all the recordings. The music video for this is actual even older it’s probably even like 2 and a half years old. We really need to make a new music video for something. We will definitely do that for the next record.

WWWHHH - So there’s another version of WWWHHH that we recorded at a different time that I think I liked better, idk why this got used. This was a real big live number in the early days. It was “pretty catchy” you might say. I think I played drums on this cuz cody couldn’t make it in time for us to record it. They aren’t very good and they are really loud. Organ solo, haha that’s funny. Some elastic audio business happened at the end of the bridge and we didn’t know how to fix it so we just made it a freak out instead.

Paint - So this version was pretty similar to the version we made for the very first unnofficial “yellow” EP. There’s new drums, and idk what else we did. This started the tradition that has continued (and I hope it will continue to) of having the last song on our records end with some big ridiculous long jam. I think the idea is that we’ve done our best to be concise and entertain you through the rest of the record, and that if you’ve made it this far you hopefully won’t mind a long abstract jam. I liked mikes abstract lyrics a lot. I remember we started of our soundoff! finally with an extremely truncated version of this, partially as a joke/prank, and my dad told me he was really scared that we were going to play the whole song and bore everyone haha. I wrote the carnivally melody that the ending jam is based around a long time before the song, at least in ‘07 or ‘08. The ending jam section parts are some of the most fun I have in the whole record-making process. So you if think they’re boring you suck (just skip it). I do think (hindsight is 20/20) the drums should come in one repeat earlier though. There’s some nice talking background noise. At the end of the song we figured out we could reverse things in pro tools, and that it would sound really cool, so we exploited that, arguably a little tastelessly. If someone reverses the very ending and tells me what cody was saying in the background I’ll give you something special. I can’t be bothered to do that myself.

So that’s it. All in all it’s an alright record and I think that its very cool to have record of what things were like at the time. I think we’ve learned a lot since then but who hasn’t right? I think we’ve improved steadily since then, and I hope to continue to.

Other than this, we have still been writing and demoing up a storm. The new record will hopefully be out for summer, at which point we will take over the world. We are currently beginning to attempt to book a slightly ambitious tour for the summer-time, if anyone has any input, suggestions, or help to offer us, we would love to hear it.

In other news, I hurt my voice and have been (attempting) to not sing at all and talk as little as possible for the last week or longer, and will be continuing this for awhile. It has been strange. But I do think it is helping. My main hope/intention is to be in really good vocal shape by the time real vocal tracking for the new record rolls around.

We went to Cali for our first shows outside of WA and OR/Put together a successfully funded Kickstarter Project/Released our first full-length/Since release time have had an explosion of constant change in the band, personnel and otherwise/Released a 7” through the awesome people at Fin Records/Played some awesome shows all throughout the year

We’re still spending our time working on a set of new songs, dedicating more direct attention to it than we have really taken time to do before. We hope to have a bunch of new songs that are super solid, and play a bunch more in 2012 before the end of the year when the world ends
